How to Make a Folder on a MacBook

Like Windows, Mac OS X uses directories or "folders" to organize the files on your computer. You locate and organize the content on your MacBook using a desktop interface called the Finder. The Finder gives you multiple ways to create a new folder with the mouse or keyboard. Find a location on your MacBook where you want to store files, and use the Finder to create a new folder.

    Double-click the "Mac OS X" icon on the desktop to access the contents of your MacBook's hard drive. Double-click the "Users" folder, and then double-click the folder with your computer username to access your home folder. If you want to create a new folder in a different location, navigate to that location instead.

    Right-click an open area of the window, and then click "New Folder." If you have a MacBook with a single-button trackpad, hold the "Control" key while clicking. You can also create a new folder by clicking the "File" menu at the top of the screen and selecting "New Folder" or pressing the "Shift," "Command" and "N" keys simultaneously. This creates a new folder called "Untitled Folder."

    Click the name of the new folder to highlight it, and then click the name again to display a cursor.

    Type the desired name for the folder, and then press "Return."
