How to Delete Without Right Clicking on a Mac

If you're used to the Windows environment, you may be accustomed to using the mouse or trackpad to right-click when you want to delete an item. However, things are a bit different when using a Mac. The OS X operating system that runs on all new Mac computers enables you to use menu options to make deletions. Apple requires all software developers to use the same menu options for basic tasks such as deleting an item, so once you learn how to delete something, you can do it in all applications. You can also quickly get rid of items by placing them in the Trash.

  1. 1.

Launch the application and open the document containing the information you want to delete on your Mac. For example, click “TextEdit” on the Dock of your Mac to launch Apple’s native word processing application.

  2. 2.

Click to select the element you want to delete, such as a word, paragraph or image.

  3. 3.

Click “Edit” from the application menu, and then click “Delete.” You can also press the “Delete” key on your Mac’s keyboard to delete the selected item.

  4. 4.

Click an item on your Mac’s desktop to select it if you want to send it to the trash. Click “File” on the Finder menu, followed by “Move to Trash.” Click “Finder” from the Finder menu, and then click “Empty Trash” to delete the item from your Mac. Alternatively, drag an item from the desktop directly onto the trashcan icon on the Dock, and then click “Empty Trash” from the Finder menu.
